The Suda
The Suda (Σοῦδα) is a Byzantine Greek encyclopedia of about 31,000 entries, compiled around the end of the tenth century. It mixes a dictionary with an encyclopedia: glosses on rare words and proverbs sit beside biographies, history, geography, and long quotations from authors whose works are otherwise lost. Its order is antistoichic: words are filed by how they sounded in Byzantine Greek, so αι comes with ε, ει with ι, and οι with υ. SOL numbers these spellings as groups of their own, which this site lists under the letter they begin with.
Suda On Line
Suda On Line (SOL) is the collaborative project that translated the whole Suda into English, entry by entry, with notes, bibliography and keywords, each translation reviewed (“vetted”) by editors and every change recorded. Every text on this site comes from SOL and is the work of its translators and editors, credited on each page.
How this site differs
- It is a reading interface over SOL’s data, not a new edition. Texts are shown exactly as SOL has them.
- Notes sit beside the text, cross-references preview on hover, and neighbours in Adler order are one key away.
- Search accepts English, Greek with or without accents, Betacode, transliteration and Adler numbers.
- Anything this site adds in future (entity pages, editorial notes) will be marked as ours and kept separate.
- Corrections belong with SOL’s editors. This site links to the original page of every entry.
Licence
SOL content is licensed Creative Commons BY-NC-SA. This site is non-commercial, credits the translators and vettors of each entry, and shares under the same licence.
