What is the Suda?
The Suda is a vast Greek encyclopedia compiled in Byzantium in the late tenth century. Its entries, ordered by sound rather than strict spelling, range from one-word glosses to long biographies of poets, philosophers, emperors and saints, and much of what it preserves survives nowhere else. Between 1998 and 2014 more than a hundred volunteers translated every entry into English for Suda On Line, with notes, references and a public record of every revision. This site is a new reading room for that work: the same texts, unchanged, set for reading and linked into a web.
