having given ground
[Meaning he] having withdrawn. Homer [says]: "and having given ground [Thoas] was shaken". While withdrawing they used to shake the spears which were stuck in the shield, in order that they would be scattered.
Χασσάμενος· ἀναχωρήσας. Ὅμηρος· ὁ δὲ χασσάμενος πελεμίχθη. τὰ ἐμπησσόμενα τῇ ἀσπίδι δόρατα ἀναχωροῦντες διετίνασσον, ἵνα σκεδασθῇ.
