at the first battle cry
[Meaning] being accomplished immediately in affairs of war; that is, quickly and at the same time as the war whoop. Thus Thucydides [sc. uses the term]. In Theopompus, however, [it is used] in place of 'by force'.
Αὐτοβοεί· τὸ παραχρῆμα συντελεσθῆναι ἐν πολεμικοῖς ἔργοις, οἷον ταχέως καὶ ἅμα τῷ πολεμικῷ ἀλαλάγματι. οὕτως Θουκυδίδης. παρὰ Θεοπόμπῳ δὲ ἀντὶ τοῦ κατὰ κράτος.
