[sc. This verb occurs] in Thucydides meaning they endured or they survived or they carefully outlasted. "But the Athenians bore the war through."
Διέφερον· παρὰ Θουκυδίδῃ ἀντὶ τοῦ διήνυον ἢ ὑπέμενον ἢ ἐπιμελῶς ἐξήνυον. οἱ δὲ Ἀθηναῖοι τὸν πόλεμον διέφερον.
