Notes
- The headword is an epic contracted form related to
katamonh/ ('endurance') that occurs twice in the accusative in Homer's Iliad: 22.257 (web address 1) and 23.661. Most occurrences of the word relate to commentary on those passages.
The present entry takes one side in a debate among ancient scholars as to whether the term referred to victory in single combat or victory that results fromkatamonh/ . Scholia to the Homer passages represent both opinions. On the Suda's side of the issue see also Etymologicum Magnum 488.45. On the opposite side stand most of the critics whose names we know: Aristonicus ad locc.; Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon 94.29; Eustathius ad locc.; and cf. Hesychius kappa603.
