Translation

Amongst Romans [this is] a bronze plate, a span square,¹ which they used to place in front of their breasts. But others,² instead of this, used to put coats of chain-mail round their chests.

Καρδιοφύλαξ· παρὰ Ῥωμαίοις χάλκωμα σπιθαμιαῖον πάντη πάντως, ὃ προσετίθεντο πρὸ τῶν στέρνων. οἱ δὲ ἀντὶ τούτου ἁλυσιδωτοὺς χιτῶνας περιετίθεντο περὶ τοὺς θώρακας.

2Polybius specifies "those rated above ten thousand drachmas", i.e. members of the first (Servian) property class. The heart-protector (in Latin, pectorale) has already been characterized as worn by common soldiers; the lorica is for the rich.
