Translation

A type of footwear.¹ Sophocles [writes]: "to hurry from [ = with] a loose rein." That is from [ = with] a slipper; in whatever condition each man is in.²
And elsewhere: "the staff and these slippers, Lady Cypris, are laid up, the spoils of the cynic Posochares."³

Βλαύτη· εἶδος ὑποδήματος. Σοφοκλῆς· σπεύδειν ἀπὸ ῥυτῆρος. τουτέστιν ἀπὸ βλαύτης· ὡς ἕκαστος ἔχει σχήματος. καὶ αὖθις· ὁ σκήπων καὶ ταῦτα τὰ βλαυτία, πότνια Κύπρι, ἄγκειται κυνικοῦ σκῦλα Ποσωχάρεος.

3Greek Anthology 6.293.1-2 (Leonidas of Tarentum), using a neuter variant (cf. beta 325) of the (feminine) headword. Here, the epigrammatist ridicules a Cynic for having worn slippers--and even going so far as dedicating them to Aphrodite--when walking barefoot is much to be expected; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 124-125) and (vol. II, 362-363). For the Suda's sku=la *Poswxa/reos, read sku=l' a)po\ *Swxa/reos; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 124). Gow and Page see it as likely that, since Sochares is an uncommon name, but does occur elsewhere, the Tarentine is gesturing at a real person and not mocking cynical thinkers in general (vol. II, 362).
