Translation

[Meaning a] chest.¹ [So called] from the separation [of the parts of the coffer] that happens upon its opening; or from something being heaped up [xei=sqai] in it, as if being placed inside; or from its containing [xwrei=n] things placed in it.²
Also [sc. attested is] xhlw=| ("in a coffer"), [meaning] in a chest.³

Χηλός· κιβωτός. ἀπὸ τῆς γενομένης διαστάσεως κατὰ τὴν ἄνοιξιν· ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ χεῖσθαί τι εἰς αὐτήν, οἷον ἐντίθεσθαι· ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ τὰ ἐντιθέμενα χωρεῖν. καὶ Χηλῷ, κιβωτῷ.

[1] This gloss is found in Etymologicum Genuinum and Etymologicum Magnum 811.12; see also Lexicum Ambrosianum 220 (according to Adler), ps.-Herodian 150 and the scholia to Homer, Iliad 16.221 (where the genitive singular of the headword appears: web address 1).
2The rationale behind this last etymology is that a synonym for xwre/w is xa/w, which would provide the necessary root for xhlo/s. [However, xa/w is an artificial and late word and not the source of the root of xhlo/s; see LSJ s.v. xa/w at web address 2 below.] The true derivation of the headword is more probably from xai/nw/xa/skw, "to gape; open". ↩
3The form here is the dative singular, which appears in Homer, Iliad 16.254 and Odyssey 13.10.
