Notes (1)
- According to Professor Victor A. Friedman, the headword↩
xonsa/ occurs in Russian Church Slavonic. It also occurs in Russian and Old Serbo-Croatian as chusa and in Old Polish as chąsa. It is a borrowing from Gothic hansa 'crowd' and in Russian means 'ambush'; in Old Serbo-Croatian and Old Polish 'robbery'.
Despite the plural in the gloss, the form of the headword is a nominative singular a-stem. The TLG finds no attestation in Greek besides here; the derivativexonsa/rioi appears in the Strategicon of the 11th c. tactician Cecaumenus.- 1beta 423.
