Translation

[Meaning] impulses.¹
"Taking encouragement from the general opinion of the soldiers, he/it provided strange and unexpected assistance from the general to the determination already present."²

Ἐφέσεις· ὁρμάς. ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς τῶν στρατιωτῶν γνώμης λαβὼν ἔφεσιν παρὰ τοῦ στρατηγοῦ ξένην καὶ παράδοξον βοήθειαν ἐπορίσατο πρὸς τὴν ὑποκειμένην παράστασιν.

[1] The headword, evidently quoted from somewhere, is the nominative and accusative plural of the feminine noun e)/fesis (for which see also epsilon 3865, and in another sense epsilon 3866), which appears in the following passage in the accusative singular.
2An unplaced grammatical fragment from Polybius' Histories (fr. 161 Büttner-Wobst). It receives no discussion in Walbank's commentary (see bibliography). For a Latin translation, see the 1839 French edition of Polybius, p. 163. Büttner-Wobst notes that Schweighäuser deemed the attribution of this fragment to Polybius to be doubtful (p. 535); he accepts the emendation of Henri Valois kata/stasin "order of battle" instead of the Suda's para/stasin.
