[1] Iacchus is another name for Bacchus a.k.a Dionysus (iota 11). The literal meaning of the headword is "they say Iacchus." See LSJ entry at web address 1. "Guarding" seems to be a different interpretation of the passage in Herodotus (next note), as referring to the secrecy of the mysteries.
