Translation

[Meaning] doorkeeper, guard.¹
And [there is] a proverb: "nor inside the ioros". And the law in force amongst Athenians used to stipulate that murderers stay "outside the ioros."² So the proverb was applied to people making threats and being agitated.³

Ἰωρός· θυρωρός, φύλαξ. καὶ παροιμία· οὐδ' ἐντὸς ἰωροῦ. καὶ ὁ νόμος ὁ παρ' Ἀθηναίοις ἐκτὸς ἰωροῦ ἐκέλευεν εἶναι τοὺς ἀνδροφόνους. ἐπὶ τοίνυν τῶν ἀπειλούντων καὶ σοβαρευομένων τῇ παροιμίᾳ ἐκέχρητο.
