Notes
- See also alpha 1654, kappa 320, Catholic Encyclopedia entry at web address 1. For the spelling discrepancy (b or p) and the 'proper name' (the eponymous founder of the city was Menelaus' helmsman K.: Strabo 17.1.17) see Stephanus of Byzantium s.v. Kanopos.
The city (Barrington Atlas map 74 grid C2) was long sunken. Franck Goddio identified its exact location in the Aboukir region in 1999, since when it has been the subject of some spectacular underwater archaeology. See web address 2.
Besides the Nile city (and associated toponyms, including the Canopic mouth of the Nile) in Egypt, a Kanopos in Libya and another near Byzantium are also attested.
