Translation

[Meaning a] wave of the sea.¹
"The sea-beaten dust has covered the ageless mouth of the whole world, stranger". The story [is] about Homer.²
But [sc. upper-case] Halirrothios [is] a son of Poseidon.³

Ἁλιρρόθιον· κῦμα θαλάσσης. ἀγήρατον στόμα κόσμου παντός, ἁλιρροθία ξεῖνε κέκευθε κόνις. περὶ Ὁμήρου ὁ λόγος. Ἁλιρρόθιος δὲ υἱὸς Ποσειδῶνος. καὶ ζήτει ἐν τῷ Ἄρειος πάγος.

The epigram is inscribed on a headless double herm (to Homer and Menander) found outside the walls of Rome, Alle Tre Fontane, in what had probably been Aelian's (Claudius Aelianus, sophist, ca. 170 – ca. 235 CE, cf. alphaiota 178) garden or study (ibid.); cf.
