Translation

Meaning despondent. Plato [in] Republic [book] 5 [sc. uses the word].¹ That is, one who is distressed.
"The soldiers, despite seeming fainthearted and with their bodies worn out in the earlier battle, took their chance and won".² Meaning [sc. they were] in poor morale.

Ἄθυμος· ἀντὶ τοῦ ἀθυμήτης. Πλάτων Πολιτείας εʹ. ἤγουν ὁ λελυπημένος. οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται καίτοι ἄθυμοι δοκοῦντες καὶ τὰ σώματα πονηθέντες ἐν τῇ προτέρᾳ μάχῃ παρεβάλοντο καὶ ἐνίκησαν. ἀντὶ τοῦ τὴν ψυχὴν κακοί.

1Plato, Republic 1.456A (web address 1 below) -- feminine there, because referring to a woman's capacity to be a Guardian. Thus the glossing here, o( leluphme/nos, indicates that the headword itself has been quoted from somewhere else; and in fact that gloss occurs in the scholia to Sophocles, Oedipus Tyrannus 319, where masculine a)/qumos occurs (of Teiresias: tau 453). ↩
