Translation

[Meaning] banqueters and club-members and symposiasts and those such as feast together. Thus Aristophanes [uses this word].¹
"The king granted an after-dinner entertainment to the feasters as if it were something noteworthy, and this he was showing."²

Δαιταλεῖς· δαιτυμόνες καὶ θιασῶται καὶ συμπόται καὶ οἷον συνδαιταλεῖς. οὕτως Ἀριστοφάνης. ἐπιδείπνιον ὁ βασιλεὺς θέαν τοῖς δαιταλεῦσιν ὥσπερ ἀξιόλογον χαριζόμενος, τοῦτ' ἐδείκνυεν.

[1] Daitaleis (or Daitales) is the title of a lost play by Aristophanes (staged 427 BCE); see Kassel-Austin, PCG II pp.122-148, and further, next note.
2Theophylact Simocatta, Histories 5.5.9 (on Chosroes II; cf. chi 418 note), with an extraneous addendum; cf. de Boor (198) and Whitby (139). (Attempts to emend this quotation into a plausible fragment of Aristophanes' Daitaleis are misconceived.) In 591, Chosroes had the Persian rebel general Bryzakios executed at a banquet; cf. alpha 2015.
