Optative [of the verb oi)=da]; meaning I would have learned.
[The participle] is ei)dw/s, [genitive] ei)do/tos; and the optative ought to be ei)/doimi, but not ei)dei/hn, since [verbs] which have the participle oxytone ending in -s, declined with [the stem] -nt-, have the optative [ending] in -hn, like tufqei/s, tufqei/hn.¹ But it [ei)dw/s] is not declined with -nt-, and [the optative] should not be ei)dei/hn. But as if with a change of -mi into -hn and of -o- into -e-, [it is] ei)dei/hn. And since the optative is with pure -hn,² when the present is perispomenon, like poiw= ["I make", indicative], e)a\n poiw= ["If I make", subjunctive],³ or if they have the participle [ending] with -s with acute accent, declined with -nt-, [like] darei/s ["having been flayed"], darw= ["I may be flayed"], so given that this [verb] is neither with circumflex accent in the present tense nor has an oxytone participle [ending] with -s declined with -nt- (for [the participle is] ei)dw/s, ei)do/tos), it should not have a circumflex accent; but it does have a circumflex, as has been said,⁴ since the optative came to have pure -hn.
