Notes (2)

  1. The unglossed headword, attested only here, is a neuter noun in the nominative/vocative/accusative) singular. It appears to be a late compound of nho/s ("temple", an epic and Ionic form; see LSJ s.v.) and fulakei=on ("watch-tower, watch, posted guard detail"; see LSJ s.v.).
The masculine noun naofu/lac (found in Attic tragedy and in Aristotle) occurs in two senses: "temple-guard" and "ship-master" (LSJ s.v.).
  2. 1That is, with the accent on the antepenultimate syllable (Dickey, p. 255; Smyth §157). ↩
  3. 2In other words, it is suggested that the headword should be written nhofula/kion. ↩
