Translation

[Meaning they] becoming friends, just as polemwqe/ntes ["having been made enemies"] [means they] becoming enemies.1
Aelian in Varied History [writes]: "certain people having been made friends to [the] Romans for freedom's sake; but then they did not keep the faith which is the bond of friendship."2

Greek original · Adler’s text

Φιλωθέντες· φίλοι γενόμενοι, ὥσπερ πολεμωθέντες, πολέμιοι γενόμενοι. Αἰλιανὸς Ποικίλῃ ἱστορίᾳ· ἐπ' ἐλευθερίᾳ τινὲς Ῥωμαίοις φιλωθέντες· εἶτα μέντοι τὴν πίστιν, ἥπερ οὖν δεσμός ἐστι φιλίας, οὐκ ἐτήρησαν.

Notes (2)

  1. 1The headword, presumably extracted from the quotation given, is aorist passive participle of filo/w (cf. phi 446), masculine nominative plural. ↩
  2. 2Aelian fr. 7 Domingo-Forasté (7 Hercher): i.e. not part of the Varia Historia as transmitted. ↩
