Translation

In the masculine.1
"So much sought by him [Justinian] was always the destruction of men ..."2
And elsewhere: "a great destruction of bodies occurred."3
"For if it is necessary to understand the destruction at all, anyone who saw what happened then would have known it with certainty."4

Greek original · Adler’s text

Φθόρος· ἀρσενικῶς. οὕτως ἦν αὐτῷ κατεσπουδασμένος ὁ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀεὶ φθόρος. καὶ αὖθις· πολὺς δὲ φθόρος ἐγίνετο τῶν σωμάτων. εἰ γάρ τι δεῖ νοεῖν τὸν φθόρον, τότ' ἂν ἰδών τις τὸ συμβαῖνον ἔγνω σαφῶς.

Notes (4)

  1. 1Sc. as contrasted with the feminine noun fqora/. Both are related to the verb fqei/rw (phi 484). ↩
  2. 2Procopius, Secret History 13.8 (web address 1); cf. Kaldellis (62). On Justinian see iota 446 generally. ↩
  3. 3Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable. ↩
  4. 4As n. 3. ↩
