[Meaning he/she/it] diverts, proceeds indirectly, just like nea/zei ["is/acts young"] and xroni/zei ["spends time, lingers"] and r(a|qumei= ["relaxes, is lazy"].1
"[Why do] you lurk continually around the door.[?]" The 'continually' is an Attic superfluity; butkupta/zeis ["you lurk" is used] meaning you loiter and you waste time.2
Also [sc. attested is the middle voice]strageu/omai , [meaning] I postpone, I waste time. So once, he is saying, it has been decided, why do I put off, and hesitate, and waste time, and shirk?3

Greek original · Adler’s text
Στραγεύει· διαβάλλει, οὐκ εὐθὺς πορεύεται, ὥσπερ νεάζει καὶ χρονίζει καὶ ῥᾳθυμεῖ. κυπτάζεις ἔχων περὶ τὴν θύραν. Ἀττικῶς περιττεύει τὸ ἔχων· τὸ δὲ κυπτάζεις ἀντὶ τοῦ στραγεύῃ καὶ διατρίβεις. καὶ Στραγεύομαι, ἀναβάλλομαι, διατρίβω. ἅπαξ οὖν, φησί, δόξαν, τί παρέλκω, καὶ μέλλω, καὶ διατρίβω, καὶ ἀναδύομαι;

Notes (3)
- 1Likewise in the Synagoge (sigma243) and Photius' Lexicon (sigma598 Theodoridis), and similiarly elsewhere, including a scholion on Aristophanes, Clouds 131 (see further below) and (as far as 'proceeds indirectly') Hesychius sigma1956. (It is the Suda, however, which adds 'and' before 'you waste time'.) Some scholars would emend the first glossing synonym from
diaba/llei toa)naba/llei "postpones". The headword itself, evidently quoted from somewhere, is third person singular, present indicative active, ofstrageu/w orstraggeu/w (a verb more often used in the middle voice: see LSJ). ↩ - 2Aristophanes, Clouds 509 (Socrates to Strepsiades), with scholion; cf. kappa 2740. In the idiom used here, 'continually' is in fact the participle
e)/xwn . ↩ - 3From the fuller scholia on Aristophanes, Clouds 131, where Strepsiades is initially reluctant to knock on Socrates' door. ↩
