[Meaning] any [sc. kind of] skin. From which also [comes] the [noun] skuteu/s ["leather-man"].1
"And he drives the spear into the head, yet he does not split [it] open, as the spear-point slides off round the leather."2

Notes (2)

  1. 1Likewise or similarly in other lexica, including Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon, and a scholion to Homer, Odyssey 14.34. Here "leather" means leather helmet. For "leather-man" see also the first gloss at sigma 727. ↩
  2. 2Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable. ↩
