Translation

[Meaning] making a choice in respect of officials.
Also [sc. attested is the Ionic form] a)rxairesi/h, [meaning] to live by the favour of the masses, or to make voluntary contributions of money. Herodotus [sc. uses the word].¹

Ἀρχαιρεσία· περὶ ἀρχῶν ἐκλογή. καὶ Ἀρχαιρεσίη, τὸ πρὸς χάριν πολλῶν ζῆν, ἢ τὸ ἐπιδόσεις χρημάτων ποιεῖσθαι. Ἡρόδοτος.

1Herodotus 6.58.3 (web address 1 below), on the ten-day suspension of elections in Sparta whenever a king dies. The Herodotus passage, in other words, illustrates the first rather than the second of the two meanings of archairesia given here. The second, albeit deriving from glosses on another passage in Herodotus (6.58.3), reflects post-classical usage.
