Meaning enjoins, commands, directs.1
"And [he] gives orders for the departure for Italy."2
And elsewhere: "the emperor kindly receives him, and tells him to be of good courage, and if he should want something to order it" (meaning to ask for it) "and he pleaded on behalf of Vonones, son of Phraates, who had been confined in darkness for 30 years."3
And elsewhere [sc. is attested the participle] "giving orders", meaning enjoining. "Although it was the custom for the emperor to place in books personal records of whatever might happen while he was giving orders, Justin the emperor neither directed nor was he able to superintend these things being done."4
Driven in[to] the cave and seeing his enemies, David calls for the divine mercy, "Have mercy upon me, God, have mercy upon me.'5
