Translation

[i(ketei/a means the same as] i(kesi/a.1
Supplication [i(ketei/a] differs from i(kethri/a. Supplication is what one does with words, when one begs to obtain pardon or mercy. Antiphon [writes]: "he begged you not to pity me, lest I try with tears and supplications to mislead you".2 But i(kethri/a is what those who beg bring as some kind of offering or hold in their hands.3

Notes (3)

  1. 1The form i(ketei/a replaced i(kesi/a (iota 258) in Attic: see both words in LSJ (web addresses 1 & 2). ↩
  2. 2Antiphon fr. 137 Sauppe; 'he' is the opponent in the trial. ↩
  3. 3See iota 265. ↩
