Notes (3)

  1. 1Likewise, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon. ↩
  2. 2A garbled version of Aristophanes, Knights 294-5, where Kleon says "I will tear you to pieces if you mutter anything" and the Sausage-seller retorts "I will dung you if you chatter on". See web address 1. ↩
  3. 3From the scholia to this Aristophanic passage. It does not point out -- but J. Henderson, The Maculate Muse (New Haven 1975) 69 and 193 does -- that the verb here effectively means to bugger. ↩
