Menander in False Heracles [sc. uses the phrase].1 Meaning riddling [ones]. For Karkinos, when depicting Orestes [departing?] from Ilion [and] compelled to admit that he had killed his mother, made him reply in riddles.2

Notes (2)

  1. Also in Photius (Lexicon kappa193 Theodoridis).
For Karkinos see already kappa 396.
  2. 1Menander fr. 525 Kock (415 K.-A.). ↩
  3. 2Orestes (omicron 537, omicron 538) had no business to be '[departing] from Ilion' (Troy), so emendation is necessary, e.g. 'compelled by Menelaos' (Hemsterhuys). Theodoridis notes other possibilities. ↩
