From the [writings] of Sophocles. Ajax says to his own child: "for not perceiving [is] certainly a painless evil, until you learn to rejoice and to grieve."1

Notes (1)

  1. cf. generally kappa 423, kappa 424.
  2. 1Sophocles, Ajax 554b-5 (web address 1). The first part of this quotation (to\ mh\ fronei=n...kako/n, line 554b) is also present in the mss of Sophocles, but is bracketed by most modern editors as an intrusive gloss derived from another play; cf. zeta 61, epsilon 1484. ↩
