Translation

The saying [is] about Philoctetes: "This man perhaps second to none of the first-born families, lies ill-fated [more] than all in life, alone [far] from others, with dappled or shaggy beasts."1

Greek original · Adler’s text

Λασίοις· περὶ Φιλοκτήτου ὁ λόγος· οὗτος πρωτογόνων ἴσως οἴκων οὐδενὸς ὕστερος, πάντων ἄμμορος ἐν βίῳ κεῖται, μοῦνος ἀπ' ἄλλων, στικτῶν ἢ λασίων μετὰ θηρίων.

Notes (1)

  1. The unglossed headword is the dative plural of the adjective la/sios (cf. lambda 134, lambda 136), but the passage quoted uses the genitive plural. Presumably, therefore, the headword is extracted from somewhere else. There is no equivalent entry in Photius, but note Hesychius lambda365: lasi/oisi: dase/si: 'sth/qesi lasi/ois' (a version of sth/qessin lasi/oisi in Homer, Iliad 1.189).
  2. 1Sophocles, Philoctetes 180-185 (a lyric passage). ↩
