Translation

[Meaning] the commander of the ship.1
This [is used] in common gender;2 but poetry writes thus [sc. when it wants to describe] also him who suffered shipwreck.3

Greek original · Adler’s text

Ναυηγός· ὁ τῆς νηὸς ἀρχηγός. τοῦτο κοινῶς· ἡ δὲ ποίησις καὶ τὸν ναυαγήσαντα οὕτω γράφει.

Notes (3)

  1. Adler indicates this entry, which is lacking in manuscripts AFV, as an interpolation.
  2. 1The more common sense of the headword is "shipwreck victim," as from the verb a)/gnumi ["break"]; the meaning glossed here interprets the second element of the compound as the verb a)/gw ["lead"]. ↩
  3. 2It has two terminations, i.e. no special feminine forms. ↩
  4. 3For instances of this, in poetry and prose alike, see LSJ s.v. ↩
