Notes (1)
- From the list of proto-philosophers in Diogenes Laertius 1.1: '[they say that] Mokhos [sic] was a Phoenician, and Zalmoxis a Thracian, and Atlas a Libyan'. This version of the name is adequately corroborated elsewhere (e.g. Josephus, Jewish Antiquities 1.107), but no Suda ms has it.
- 1On Zamolxis or Salmoxis, a god of the Thracian tribe known as the Getai, who in some legends was originally a mortal and the freed slave of Pythagoras, see Herodotus 4.94-96 (web address 1); Strabo 7.3.5. See also zeta 17 and pi 3120. ↩
