Notes (2)
- This mangled passage is unidentifiable as such, but the Mithridates in question must be the sixth and best-known Hellenistic king of Pontus (120-63 BCE) to bear that name (mu 1044 and elsewhere), which is more properly Mithradates. When deposed by his son Pharnaces, and '[i]nured to poison by years of practice, he had to ask an obliging Gallic bodyguard to run him through with a sword' (Brian McGing in OCD(4) s.v.) See also under mu 113, pi 2024, phi 858.
- 1Adler does print
fw=s , 'light', but perhapsfw/s , 'man'? ↩ - 2In place of 'another Mithridates' Bernhardy suggested
*miqrida/th| a)nti/palos 'an adversary to Mithridates.' ↩
