Translation
[sc. A term applicable] not solely to a chariot. Aristophanes [writes]: "and will this not be rightly so, when I mounted on a dung-beetle's conveyance and saved the Greeks."1 And elsewhere Aristophanes [writes]: "now is this not an insult and a great conceit that I, Dionysos son of Winejug, am walking and toiling, but him [the slave Xanthias] I let ride, in order that he is not distressed, nor even carrying a burden?"2

Ὄχημα· οὐκ ἐπὶ ἅρματος μόνου. Ἀριστοφάνης· οὐκοῦν δικαίως, ὅστις εἰς ὄχημα κανθάρου ἐπιβὰς ἔσωσα τοὺς Ἕλληνας. καὶ αὖθις Ἀριστοφάνης· εἶτ' οὐχ ὕβρις ταῦτ' ἐστι καὶ πολλὴ τρυφή, ὅτ' ἐγὼ μὲν υἱὸς ὢν Σταμνίου Διόνυσος βαδίζω καὶ πονῶ· τοῦτον δ' ὀχῶ, ἵνα μὴ ταλαιπωροῖτο, μηδ' ἄχθος φέροι;
