Translation

Aristophanes [writes]: "but you will not make repayment and you will not carry [it] out, I know, but you will deceive utterly and you will gape1 at him exceedingly."2 But [sc. also attested is] "we will carry out",3 that is we will devote [ourselves] to the task. We will rush to this. But properly, to carry out is to begin an act. Aristophanes [also writes]: "Come on! Quickly you! Hold the bowl, so that we may carry out a task, having prayed to the gods."4

Notes (4)

  1. The headword, extracted from the first quotation given, appears here as fialei=s but should probably be e)fialei=s, i.e. from a verb e)fia/llw, not fia/llw. (For the contrary view, see LSJ s.v. on the latter: web address 1.) The error, if such it is, is carried through to the scholia ad loc. and arises from incorrect word-division, i.e. not ou)de\ fialei=s but ou)d' e)fialei=s.
  2. 1Here "to gape" has the sense of "to bamboozle". ↩
