Translation

The [sc. god] exercizing oversight of friendships. Menander in Man-woman [writes]: "I testify, Kraton, by Friendly Zeus".1 Pherecrates in Good-for-nothings [writes]: "to the judges who are now judging I say, do not break your oath or judge unjustly -- or, by Friendly [sc. Zeus], Philocrates will tell you a tale far more slanderous than this one".2

Notes (2)

  1. = Photius phi175 Theodoridis, though the headword there is the phrase 'Philios Zeus'; the Suda omits the noun.
    See generally LSJ s.v. fi/lios, I.2.
  2. 1Menander fr. 54 Kock, 49 K.-Th., 53 K.-A. ↩
  3. 2Pherecrates fr. 96 Kock (102 K.-A.). 'Philokrates' here (and in Photius) is an error, it is generally supposed, for the name of Pherecrates himself. ↩
