*filo/zw|os.
Notes
- On this adjective see generally LSJ s.v. Its range of meanings is wide: (a) with the 'life'-etymology (properly spelled
filo/zwos ) it covers 'fond of one's life, with collat. sense of cowardly', 'of patients in disease, desirous of living', and 'of plants, tenacious of life'; (b) with the 'creature'-etymology (properly spelledfilo/zw|os ) its main meaning is 'fond of animals'. Adler footnotes Marcus Aurelius, Meditations '1.16.20' [1.16.5], for which see pi 2766; but in fact the word could have been extracted from anywhere.
