Translation

[Meaning] signs, measures. The garments of skin are like a sign before death that man has become perishable.1
If a certain signal should occur, they used to accomplish the things which had been decided. "If an earthquake should occur, or a horrible fire, or a weasel should rush past," or some such thing.2
