Continuity [is] a species of contact; so he who defines continuity as a genus of contact is mistaken. For not everything that is in contact is continuous; for things that are in contact are only in contact, not also continuous. Not1 everything, however, that is continuous is in contact; consequently, being in contact [extends] beyond being continuous.

Notes (1)
- Alexander of Aphrodisias, Commentaries on Aristotle's Topica 315.23-27 Wallies (concerning Topica 122b25-26).
- 1The lexicographer does begin this sentence with a negative,
ou) , which is not in Alexander and which confuses the sense. Everything that is continuous is in contact, so continuous things are a subset of things in contact. ↩
