Translation
[Meaning] hard [ones] -- for such is the timber of the maple; meaning slingers [sphendonetai].1 The [headword] sphendamninoi is the same as the [word] prininoi ["oak-wood men"]; for maple is a kind of hard wood. Maple is also a kind of hemp [kannabis]; for the sling [sphendone] comes from hemp.

Notes (1)
- From the scholia to Aristophanes, Acharnians 181, where the headword occurs. This ancient commentator does himself (and us) no favours by basing his note on an etymological confusion between
sfe/ndamnos , maple, andsfendo/nh , sling (and their cognates). - 1cf. generally sigma 1728. ↩
