Notes
- A very confused entry. Adler reports that mss AF (and, essentially, V) have only
*ski/fos: to\ ci/fos , which makes sense in that the headword is attested in lexica and grammars (but not in literature) as a variant (in Aeolic dialect, according to some ancient commentators, e.g. ps.-Theodosius, On grammar 37, hence LSJ) of the commonplace neuter nounci/fos ('sword'), xi 76. This would make the entry similar to ones in Hesychius (sigma1036), Etymologicum Magnum (718.12), etc. The remainder, which (ignoring the nonsensical punctuation) would read "that which is called among ussknipo/s ," would make sense as the gloss for a hypothetical headwordsknifo/s orskipo/s , both of which are attested as variants for that adjective (e.g. Hesychius sigma1021). Possibly the similarity ofsknifo/s to the present headword led to the melding of two entries, but other confusions are possible as well. See also the similar words at sigma 631 (ski/fh ) and sigma 633 (ski/y ['flea']), recording a more common variantskni/y which has as its normal genitive singular thesknipo/s found in the present entry.
