Translation

We never as a rule say Samothrake, but separately;1 just as "in a high polis" [means] on the akropolis.1

Greek original · Adler’s text

Σάμου ὑληέσσης· οὐδέποτε κατὰ τὴν συνήθειαν λέγομεν Σαμοθρᾴκην, ἀλλὰ διαλελυμένως· ὥσπερ ἐν πόλει ἄκρῃ, τῇ ἀκροπόλει.

Notes (2)

  1. 1(i.e. literally Thracian Samos. This also occurs in the Homeric Hymns (3.24); and in Homer, Iliad 24.78 & 753 Samothrake is called simply Samos.) cf. the scholia to Homer, Iliad 13.12, where (12-13) *sa/mou u(lhe/sshs | *qrhi+ki/hs occurs (web address 1). For Samothrake, cf. sigma 79 (and under alpha 1164, alpha 1853, upsilon 126). ↩
  2. 2cf. the scholia to Homer, Iliad 6.88, where this phrase occurs (web address 2). ↩
