Plato in Timaeus [writes]: "but being balanced unevenly, the earth, although being shaken by them [sc. the forms of Being, Space, and Becoming], also motivates these others to shake in turn."1 [sc. The word is used] metaphorically from beam-scales -- since the beam scale is called a balance. Also [sc. attested is the verb] u(pertalanta=n ["to overbalance"], an outweighing.2

Notes (2)
- The headword (extracted from the quotation given) is the present middle/passive participle, feminine accusative singular, of the contract verb
talanta/w , I balance, sway, oscillate; see generally LSJ s.v., and cognates at tau 31, tau 32, tau 33, tau 34, and tau 36. - 1Plato, Timaeus 52E (web address 1), on the original cause of motion in the cosmos; Guthrie, p. 271. ↩
- 2Same entry in Timaeus, Platonic Lexicon tau1003b8, and Photius, Lexicon tau21 Theodoridis (though it is the Suda compiler who adds the name 'Plato'). See also Etymologicum Magnum 744.12-7 (Kallierges), and cf. ps.-Zonaras 1714.10. Adler also cites Etymologicum Genuinum. [In her critical apparatus Adler reports that ms F lacks the end of the gloss,
to\ u(perbarei=n (an outweighing), and the next two entries.] ↩
