Translation

[Meaning] well-trodden roads. Aelian [writes]: "and looking up they see pathways of the ascent and approaches, by which the Roman went up, and they realised that it was not impassible but climbable."1

Notes (1)

  1. The headword is accusative plural, presumably extracted from the quotation given (though see also Xenophon, Cynegeticus 4.9).
  2. 1Aelian fr. 114 Hercher, from an account of the famous story of the Capitol in Rome being menaced by the Gauls in 390 BCE (but saved by geese); cf. generally Livy 5.47. ↩
