Translation

Contemplation is the fulfillment of a priesthood which does not belie its name; but contemplation and action do not consent to occur together. For an impulse [is] an impulse of actions;1 but no [action is] impassive.2

Notes (2)

  1. From Synesius, Epistles 57, p.199a Hercher (which is actually a speech Against Andronicus: see translation at web address 1).
  2. 1The Suda does repeat o(rmh/ "impulse", but Synesius says a)rxh/ "cause". ↩
  3. 2Contemplation, on the other hand, is impassive (apathes). On theory and praxis (action) see in general theta 214 and theta 215. ↩
