Translation

Hyperides [uses this] in the sense of to take a pledge1, but Demosthenes in the [speech] On the Tax-Exemptions in the sense of to approve and ratify a law2. However, in the [speech] Against Stephanos he says "having had placed laws private to himself", instead of "having placed".3

Notes (3)

  1. From Harpokration (and Photius) s.v.
  2. 1Hyperides fr. 169 Jensen. ↩
  3. 2Demosthenes 20.55. (With law(s) as the subject there, the textual error in the present passage -- but not already in Harpok. -- is clear: read no/mon, "a law", for mo/non, "only".) ↩
  4. 3Demosthenes 46.23. ↩
