Translation

[Meaning] strength, power.¹
Hesiod [writes]: "for the Olympian gave might to the sons of Aeacus, intelligence to the sons of Amythaon, and wealth to the sons of Atreus."²
And Polybius [writes]: "for the might of words also knows [how] to disdain death."³

Ἀλκή· ἰσχὺς, δύναμις. Ἡσίοδος· ἀλκὴν μὲν γὰρ ἔδωκεν Ὀλύμπιος Αἰακίδῃσι, νοῦν δ' Ἀμυθαονίδαις, πλοῦτον δὲ περ' Ἀτρείδῃσι. καὶ Πολύβιος· οἶδε γὰρ καὶ λόγων ἀλκὴ θανάτου καταφρονεῖν.

The fragment is Theophylact's wry comment after quoting Domitianus's rousing speech to Roman soldiers at Ammodius (Ammodios, Amouda; about 40 stades (8 km) south of Dara, Barrington Atlas map 89 grid C3) in 591; cf. beta 54 and tau 261.
