Whenever a city or a ruler wanted someone outside their control to be done away with, an announcement used to be made promising money to the man who did away with him or took him alive; an example is the proclamation of the Greeks to the effect that they would give 100 talents to the man who brought Xerxes to Athens, whether alive or dead.
