Translation
Meaning to send off the runners. But some write ei(/hte [here], meaning send off sc. the runners. This has the sounder rationale. For when the spectators say 'send off' sc. the runners, that is when you too throw yourself down. But in many [copies] e(/nai , meaning i(/hte , is written. Perhaps the second ei(=nai should read e(\s kai\ sauto/n , with the first one being an error. Someone might say that this too has a rationale to be so, on the basis that the spectators are encouraging the man who has given the signal in accordance with the ancient system.
