Notes

  1. Abbreviated from Stephanus of Byzantium s.v., who claims that they took their name from a R.Nigres, and quotes a phrase -- kai\ a)gxe/maxoi *ni/grhtes ("and the Nigretes, hand-to-hand fighters") -- from 'Dionysius' (i.e. D. Periegetes, Orbis descriptio 215).
See also Strabo 2.5.33, 16.4.37, 17.3.3 & 7; and Barrington Atlas map 29, right side ('Nigritae').
